Secure email communication
Accessing email with maximum
security
All email transfers can run on encrypted channels as any mail
service (SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, WebMail) can be run in a secure mode, where data is
encrypted using SSL.
Antivirus control of email
Support for antivirus systems makes Kerio MailServer a secure
shield to prevent the spread of computer viruses. By checking both incoming and
outgoing email the risk of virus infection is much lower for external addressees
as well. Anti-virus check is of course performed even with emails sent within
the local network, which eliminates the risk of infection of the network in case
the virus has not been originally brought in by email. Kerio Mail Server
supports a range of top antivirus products using plug-ins developed with help
from anti-virus software vendors, including Mcaffee, NOD and F-Secure.
Filtering dangerous attachments
In addition to anti-virus control, Kerio Mail Server can
check emails directly and remove potentially dangerous attachments. Filtering is
performed for all files according to their extensions (eg. .exe, .com or .vbs, a
favorite among virus authors). This might be desirable in case, for instance,
when anti-virus software is not yet aware of a new virus and classifies a
potentially dangerous attachment as safe.
Filtering according to contents
An effective way of protecting users from emails containing
nuisance or unwanted messages is filtering according to the sender's or
addressee's email address, subject, contents or size of email. In combination
with filtering dangerous attachments this can protect users from the latest
viruses.
Anti-Spam Protection
A great issue on the Internet is misusing mail servers to
send unwanted emails - spam. Kerio MailServer offers two ways to check the
sender; authentication of users according to their IP address, suitable for
local networks, and authentication using username and password, suitable for
mobile users.
Protection from external spam servers
To protect users from unwanted emails public databases of
blacklisted mail servers have been established listing unreliable or insecure
mail servers. Kerio MailServer can check each email against a blacklist to find
out whether it comes from an unreliable source. If this is the case, Kerio Mail
Server either receives or refuses the mail or writes this event into a log file,
according to settings. Kerio Mail Server supports three major MAPS databases (RBL,
RSS and DUL). The mail server administrator can choose any combination of these
servers and also add their own lists of unreliable servers.
Mail Backup at the server
Kerio Mail Server can make backup copies of all emails (both
incoming and outgoing) in its own directory or at any other server. Therefore,
even in case of data loss at a workstation, all email remains available to all
users.
Faxing
Faxing with Kerio MailServer is as easy as printing. Users can send faxes from
their favorite Windows applications and receive fax messages in an email
attachment.
Directory services
Managing user accounts in Kerio MailServer is possible using either the internal
database or external directory services. Kerio MailServer is the only messaging
solution besides MS Exchange 2000/2003 to offer full Active Directory
integration, and the only one that works with Apple Open Directory on Mac OS X
Server.
Access from anywhere
Four types of access to email
The user has four full-scope means of working with email. In
addition to standard POP3, the other available means are IMAP4, access via a
graphical web interface and mobile users can control their email accounts using
a cellular phone via WAP technology.
Web interface - Kerio WebMail
The revolutionary component of Kerio Mail Server is its web
interface. This brings all the features of a mail client to the user's browser,
including searching within emails. The user can access their mail from anywhere
in the world, where Internet connection is available. Kerio MailServer's web
interface represents a full-scope environment for work with electronic mail and
rids the user of the need to use a conventional mail client. For corporate
networks, using WebMail means less effort in administration of other software
and increasing the users' mobility, as they will not be tied to a single
workstation for working with their email.
Retrieving email using IMAP or
POP3
In addition to retrieving mail using the POP3 protocol, Kerio
Mail Server allows the user to work with a more advanced IMAP protocol. The
philosophy behind IMAP is that it stores all messages and folders on the server.
The mail clients is then only an instrument for accessing the mail server. The
clear advantage of this is the ability to work with up-to-date email from more
than one workstation, while the current state is continually synchronised with
the server on each of the workstations.
Sorting mail
Kerio MailServer brings the comfort of an advanced mail
client to the server level. Therefore, the user always comes to an environment
where mail is already sorted. This is useful especially if the user often
combines IMAP, WebMail or WAP access to their email. This decreases the risk of
missing important email messages.
Public folders
Kerio Mail Server also brings the favourite feature of public
folders, known especially from groupware products. Using public folders a
company can create email folders shared by a certain groups of users. The users
can read, add or remove the email messaged within these folders, according to
their rights. In addition to general public folders each user can create a
shared folder or share an existing folder with a specific group of other users.
Public folders are useful in case they store mail addressed to a certain company
department, such as sales@company.com. Another deployment example are public
email conferences, which the company only receives once but they can be read by
more than one user.Anti-spam features of KMS
Includes integrated
SpamEliminator.
1. SMTP authorization by user name and password
Requires users to authenticate before sending email through SMTP.
2. SMTP authorization by IP address
Limits SMTP relay access to specified range of IP addresses. Relay access is
usually allowed for users within local area networks (LAN).
3. Real time blacklist support
Checks sender's IP address for each incoming SMTP connection. If the IP address
is in the MAPS or ORBS database of open-relay servers identified as spammers,
the incoming email is refused (see http://www.mail-abuse.org
4. Content filtering by address, subject, content
or size
Allows rejection of emails from notorious spammers not known to public
blacklists. Allows creation an custom blacklist. An efficient measure to fight
