| NetBIOS info - View all NetBIOS network shares on your local area network. See shared drives and printers. Also, LANA (local area network adapter) status including LANA number, MAC address, Adapter type, NetBIOS version etc. | |
| Launcher - from one tab launch a HTTP (web), FTP or TELNET session. | |

| DHCP Discovery allows you to discover DHCP servers on your local subnet. | |
| Echo allows you to connect to the echo service on another computer and type characters | |
| Finger uses and email address as it's input and communicates using finger protocol to finger servers for information about that IP address | |
| Hypertrans means "hyperfast translation", i.e bulk translation of IP addresses to hostnames and vice versa. | |
| Ident Server controls the on/off state of the IDENT (AUTH) server and allows you to configure you ident information. | |
| Launcher is provided to as a convenient way to launch a http (web) connection or an FTP session or a Telnet session | |
| NetScanner is an IP address ICMP/UDP ping sweep utility. Use it to locate active computers and gather information about those computers | |
| Ping provides standard ping features and it has been enhanced to include two major new features: Subnet Mask and Custom ICMP Generator | |
| Traceroute is similar to a UNIX utility by the same name, but the similarity ends there. This version of traceroute is multithreaded which means it is very fast | |
| Quote allows you to query a target host for the quote of the day protocol response | |
| Connection Detection - monitor up to 32 TCP or UDP ports for incoming connections. All incoming connection attempts are logged and closed. Audible alarms. | |
| Over 14 Megabytes of online documentation verses 91K for NetScanTools 4.0. This includes regular online help, HTML help and instant access to RFC reference material for each tab. |
Some new and enhanced tools.:
| NSLOOKUP has many more DNS query options including 43 vs. 7 record types for NST 5.0. | |
| TraceRoute is extremely fast. It now takes about 5 to 10 seconds to trace a complete route no matter how many hops. It now includes AS (autonomous system) routing info from IRR servers on demand. | |
| Finger List - create a list of email addresses to "finger" and it will process all of them sequentially. | |
| NetScanner completely reformatted and includes MAC address gathering from Windows computers via NetBIOS. It also gathers ARP and subnet mask information. The data gathered during a sweep can be viewed in report form by double clicking on a target. All drilldown info can be merged and exported. There is a full Hosts File Editor. | |
| IDENT server now handles more simultaneous incoming IDENT requests. | |
| IP Packet
Viewer (for Windows XP and 2000 only) can
show the IP packets going by your wired ethernet card. As a packet capture
program, it has the ability to preserve packet data for future analysis and
export to other programs.
| Netscanner is a ping sweep utility with DNS queries, NetBIOS node status queries, whois and ARP sweep. Returns whois data, NetBIOS name table and MAC address (from ARP or NetBIOS queries to Windows machines) and ARP information if you are using a network interface card like ethernet. IP and MAC address associations can be maintained in a .dbf database. |
What are some of the tasks you can do with this product?
Network discovery. Enter an IP address range into NetScanner and rapidly gather information on what computers respond to Ping, the DNS names (or NetBIOS names) of all computers in the range, their subnet address masks, whois data, NetBIOS name table and MAC address (if they are Windows machines) and ARP information if you are using a network interface card like ethernet.
DNS Checking and Testing. NSLOOKUP with 43 record query options including AAAA record queries along with Dig are available. Check the zones with List Domain (zone transfer) or Dig w/AXFR.
Firewall and Security Testing. Use Port Probe, Ping, TraceRoute, NetScanner and the custom ICMP packet generator to test your firewall for holes.
Email Testing. Use SMTP Email Generator to talk directly with an SMTP server and send messages.
Open Shares. Use NetBIOS Info to look for shares on your local Windows LAN.
Email Validate. Enter an email address and have NetScanTools Pro directly query all responsible email exchange machines for verification of the email address.
Training.
NetScanTools Pro is a great tool to help train people on the workings
of various basic TCP/IP utilities. You can also use it to demonstrate security
vulnerabilities and some of the common techniques used to map and access unsecure networks
and machines.
New features for Netscan Tools
Pro 10.x
This release adds
significant changes to the SNMP tab. The SNMP tab now fully integrates all
SNMP functions into the main executable resulting in vast improvements in
speed and accuracy. This release now includes some advanced features usually
found on more expensive SNMP products such as:
These reports and tools work with remote SNMP v1 enabled devices.
| An experimental feature has been added called OS (Operating System) Fingerprinting. This feature is based on the research done by Ofir Arkin of www.sys-security.com. It uses ICMP packet response subtleties to attempt to determine the target operating system. | |||||||||||
| HyperTrans has a new feature that can help you check the validity of DNS entries. It can do a DNS Verify where it takes an IP address, translates it to a hostname, then takes that hostname and requests the IP address from DNS. If the IP addresses do not match, the verification fails and is noted in red. A report can also be generated showing the failed DNS Verifications. | |||||||||||
| In the quest for a more usuable interface (ie. less tab overload) we have added two things. The first is a Navigation window accessible from the bottom row of buttons on the main NetScanTools Pro window. This Navigation window shows the tabs alphabetically, in their current order, or grouped by feature. You can more rapidly switch between tabs using this new feature. The second is found on the Preferences tab. You can have NetScanTools Pro show all the tabs in one or more rows, or you can have it show just one row of tabs with a set of control arrows in the upper right hand corner of the main window. | |||||||||||
| Ping and Traceroute now include graphing capability. This means that we can now show the packet verses the response time. | |||||||||||
| Traceroute also now includes 'MultiTrace'. This is a feature that can do multiple traceroutes to a target (up to 16) and then provide you with a graph that can show several different methods of display. Line and 3D bar charts are available. | |||||||||||
| Port Probe has a much requested new feature: Ping before probe. With Pinging before a probe, you can eliminate probing a host that may not be there. It can automatically skip a host or prompt you for a decision. | |||||||||||
| Port Probe also now attempts to request the operating system type from FTP servers--if you are saving login banners. | |||||||||||
| NetBIOS Info tab now queries each server found in the Shared Network Resources Info list for it's interface MAC address. | |||||||||||
| Email Validate now maintains a history list of DNS Servers. | |||||||||||
| Database Tests tab has a new feature that allows you to update your services database with a large one we distribute along with NetScanTools Pro. It will make a backup of your current services database for you just in case you want to go back to your old one. | |||||||||||
| TimeSync now has a scheduler. | |||||||||||
| Rwhois now supported by adding port number for default whois server. | |||||||||||
| Launcher tab now has user definable executables. | |||||||||||
| NetScanner now skips .0 and .255 thereby eliminating pings to default broadcast addresses. | |||||||||||
| New support features on About tab including setting defaults and dumping NetScanTools registry settings. | |||||||||||
| Tab control selection (single line or default multiline) on the Preferences tab. | |||||||||||
| Whois parser now supports net.au, ac.uk and gov.uk, .ws queries. | |||||||||||
| Most data entry fields now support up to 1023 characters. | |||||||||||
| In a move towards tighter integration, several tabs now offer "right-click" popup menus: DHCP, Ping, Traceroute, Port Probe, NetBIOS Info, NetTopography, NetScanner, and HyperTrans. These popup menus allow you to rapidly access Ping, Traceroute, Whois, Telnet, HTTP and FTP, graphing depending on the tab. | |||||||||||
| The full help file has been formatted as a PDF document and is now found in the DOCS directory under the main NetScanTools Pro directory. A link to the PDF file is now found in the Start Menu NetScanTools Pro program group. |
